Supported Living commemorate Queen with Royal Blue Party

Tributes have been paid to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, following the announcement of her death earlier today (8 September).

Cllr Shafi Ahmed, Speaker of the Council, said:

“We are all united today in grief at the loss of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, an exemplar of public service who served our country dutifully and with incredible distinction during her reign.

“While we mourn the passing of our Head of State, we also keep in our thoughts and prayers the Royal Family, who are mourning the loss of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

“Her passing is of course an incredibly sad moment in our nation’s history, but we also give thanks for her life and reign.”

Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said:

“Today we are all experiencing a profound sense of loss at the news of the Queen’s death.

“Her passing brings to an end a remarkable reign and a period in modern history in which the world has changed considerably, from post-war rationing and decolonisation through to the dawn of the internet and the digital world in which we now live.

“She was warmly welcomed to Tower Hamlets on several visits during her reign and we were all huge admirers of Elizabeth II and the way in which she represented our country with dignity, distinction and demonstrated incredible leadership at times when we needed it most.

“I have no doubt she will be forever fondly remembered by everyone in London’s East End.”

Flags at Tower Hamlets Town Hall in Mulberry Place and the new Town Hall in Whitechapel were lowered to half-mast immediately after the announcement of Her Majesty’s death and will continue to be flown in line with protocol.

An online Book of Condolence has opened on the Royal Family website. Locally, Books of Condolence will be made available to sign in person at Mulberry Place, St George’s Hall and Whitechapel Ideas Store.
